Rembrandt Van Rijn, Self-portrait c. 1629

This is my favorite of all the self-portraits, made when Rembrandt was on the cusp of discovery. On the brink of “becoming” Rembrandt. There is something coarse and rough, dark and common, while simultaneously brilliant, glorious, moving and insightful. The textures, the light, the expression, the mystery. Un-common.
