The Storm by Pierre-Auguste Cot (1880)

Despite looking like an 18th-century painting (to me, anyway), this painting of a young couple running away from the impending storm was painted about the same time as Van Gogh was developing his style.

This is a very evocative, romantic painting, not very modern in tone. The brushstrokes, the draperies, the landscape seem something out of a past age, and certainly symbolic rather than realistic. I remember having a print of this when I was younger and thinking it was very romantic.
