Mrs. (Richard Bennett) Lloyd by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1775-6)

A gorgeous neo-classical portrait by master English portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds. The lady carves her husband’s name (Lloyd) into the tree.

This was the portrait Lily Bart imitated during the game of tableaux in Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth (1905). It created talk because the painting draws attention to the lady’s lower torso, legs, and bare feet.
