A French movie (Le hussard sur le toit) is a lovely costume drama set in the 19th century.
It stars Juliette Binoche and Olivier Martinez (who might be familiar from the American film Unfaithful but is much sexier here).
The film covers the 1832 outbreak of cholera in southern France. Binoche plays a noblewoman who is searching for her husband in the area where cholera is prevalent, and he is an Italian nobleman trying to return to Italy with monies raised for the revolution.
The relationship between the two develops slowly; they meet, separate, come into contact again and escape the cholera and French army together. This is a charming, beautifully shot film.
Binoche is one of my favorite French actresses. She shines in this project, and her experience supports Martinez’s less experienced work so generously.
